B R O N C O S DAvid Bowser Errick Hargrove football coaching staff David Bowser is currently in his 15th season with the Inside Linebackers Special Teams 15th Year • NC State,™ 1992 Fayetteville State football football program and and fi rst as the Inside Linebackers/Special Special Teams Teams Coach Coach. Bowser, a 1992 graduate of North Carolina State, has a wealth of high school and college coaching experience that few can match. He is the longest tenured assistant coach on the Broncos football team. During his time at FSU, Bowser has also served as the Running Backs Coach, Defensive Backs Coach and Recruiting Coordinator. He has also had several duties off the fi eld pertaining to housing, admissions and academics in assisting FSU football student-athletes. In 2012, Michael Johnson was ranked 4th overall in the CIAA with 9.3 tackles per game. Johnson also had four interceptions for the season which had him tied for 43rd in the nation with teammate Joshua Scales. In that same season Scales was tied for third in the nation in passes defended. During the 2011 season, the FSU secondary ranked ninth in the nation in passes defended. With Scales being the anchor, he managed to lead the nation in interceptions per game with a total of seven. Scales emerged as the leader with the season-ending injury of Pre-Season All-American Andre Lyles. Lyles led the 2010 secondary after tying for fi rst in the CIAA with in interceptions and being voted All-CIAA as a junior. He was tied for eighth nationally for interceptions per game and ranked number fi fth in passes defended. In 2009, his secondary ranked third in the CIAA in pass defense and set a school record after allowing only nine yards passing against Virginia State. The Broncos were fourth in NCAA Division II in pass defense effi ciency during their CIAA Championship campaign. In that season, Jeff Gowdy tied the FSU all-time interception record with 16. During the 2008 season, Bowser’s unit fi nished second in the nation in pass defense effi ciency and ninth in interceptions. Three Bronco defensive backs, Jeff Gowdy, Robert Allen and Adrian Horton, were ranked in the top 20 in the nation for passes defended that season. John Hicks was ranked 45th in the nation that season with passes defended as well. Also to Gowdy’s credit, he led the league in picks. Prior to moving to defense, Bowser coached several All-CIAA offensive players such as DeAngelo Bridgers, Amir Holding and Nate Benton at the running back position. Before coming to Fayetteville State, he had several stops at North Carolina high schools. Bowser gained valuable coaching experience and success at Garner High School, Anson High School, Westover High School, Chapel Hill High School and Orange High School. His fi rst college coaching job was at Hamden-Sydney College in Farmville, Virginia during 1999 season. the nside Defensive Coordinator 1st Year • WSSU, 2002 ™ Errick Hargrove begins his fi rst season as the Defensive Coordinator at Fayetteville State University. Hargrove, a 2002 graduate of Winston-Salem State University, is no stranger to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). He brings a total of ten years coaching experience within the conference to FSU. He spent the previous eight seasons (2006-13) as both the Defensive and Recruiting Coordinator for Virginia State University. Hargrove had a total of six players during his tenure receive either CIAA All-Rookie or All-Conference Team recognition. In his second season the Trojans ranked inside the top 20 nationally in fumble recoveries, turnover margin and turnovers gained. VSU fi nished the 2008 season 21st in the nation in total defense behind CIAA First Team All-Conference players Brandon Fortune and Issac Mitchell. Fortune would help lead the Trojan defense in 2009 as the unit fi nished second nationally in pass defense; and in the top 20 in scoring defense, pass effi ciency defense, total defense and turnover margin. In 2010, Virginia State had the nation’s ninth-best scoring defense and was 17th in pass effi ciency defense. Prior to returning to the staff at VSU, Hargrove spent one season as Defensive Backs Coach and Co-Special Teams Coordinator at Shaw University. He coached CIAA First Team All-Conference defensive back, and Honorable Mention All-America, Torrance Nunnally in 2005 as Shaw fi nished fi rst in the conference in pass defense completion percentage and second in interceptions. Hargrove began his coaching career at Virginia State in 2002. He was with the Trojans for three seasons as the Defensive Backs Coach. During that time, VSU produced one CIAA Rookie of the Year, one CIAA First Team All-Conference member and one CIAA Second Team All-Conference representative. Virginia State fi nished inside the top 35 nationally in pass effi ciency defense in each of his three seasons; highlighted by a 15th place fi nish in 2004. Virginia State was fi fth that season nationally in scoring defense, 23rd in turnover margin and 19th in total defensive. In 2002, the Trojans fi nished fourth in the nation in scoring defense, seventh in turnover margin, 15th in total defense and 22nd in rush defense. He was a four-year letter winner at Winston-Salem State (1998- 01) and was a three-year starter at defensive back. Hargrove was part of two CIAA Championship teams in 1999 and 2000; while the 1999 squad won the Pioneer Bowl. The 1998 and 2001 Winston-Salem State teams fi nished as runners-up for the CIAA. He earned CIAA First Team All-Conference accolades in 2000. A graduate of Northern Vance High School in Henderson, Hargrove was a North Carolina Wrestling State Champion in 1997. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sport Management from Winston-Salem State in 2002, and earned a Master of Education degree from Virginia State in 2005.
