B R O N C O S Dr. Edward McLean Director of Athletics 7th Year • NC Central, 1973 ™ Dr. Edward McLean is currently in his seventh year as Director of Athletics at Fayetteville State University and his 20th year in the athletic arena. He has proven himself to be an effective leader and administrator during his tenure in Fayetteville. During his tenure at FSU, the Broncos have won three Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s golf and bowling championships, two volleyball, and one women’s tennis, softball, football and women’s basketball. Five programs have participated in NCAA Regional Playoff games while the men’s golf program advanced to the Division II National Championships. In 2011-12, the men’s golf team picked up its record seventh PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship. He believes that winning in athletics means winning in the classroom. Under McLean’s leadership, a Student-Athlete Academic Center was established to provide academic tutors with mandated study halls and an athletic academic advisor. The current retention rate is approximately 90%. McLean believes that success in the classroom is just as important as success in the athletic arena. He was instrumental in guiding FSU through the process of acquiring articifi cial turf in Luther “Nick” Jeralds Stadium and in renovating the football locker room. FSU and its facilities have seen an increase in television exposure for football and basketball games during McLean’s tenure. In 2007, McLean established the 1,000 Broncos Annual Giving Campaign. Through fundraising initiatives the campaign is striving to raise one million dollars to fund student-athlete scholarships. To-date, the 1,000 Broncos have provided ten full scholarships to deserving student-athletes. As Athletic Director at Elizabeth City State University, the university was ranked consistently among the top two or three universities within the University of North Carolina system for its student-athletes graduation rate. In 2001 and 2002, ECSU was ranked in the top 10 nationally in the USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievements Awards program, recognizing the university’s overall studentathlete graduation rate. Under his leadership, the 2005 baseball and softball teams won CIAA Championships. McLean is widely respected by his peers and, in 1996-1997 and 2004-2005, they named him CIAA Athletic Director of the Year. Accomplishments by Dr. McLean are numerous including being named the CIAA President (1999-2002), Chairperson for both the NCAA National Football Committee Division II (1998-2002) and the NCAA Southern Regional Advisory Football Committee (1994-1998) and as President, the CIAA Athletic Directors’ Association from 2004-2006. McLean has also held leadership positions at Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, where he served as Athletic Director and Chair of the Physical Education Department. He is graduate of North Carolina Central University where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. McLean obtained his doctorate from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. In addition. he has done intense research in sports psychology and motor behavior. He is married to the former Marsha Allen and they have three sons, Justin, Gibran, and Tim.
