NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP ALL-TIME NAIA PLAYOFF RESULTS December 10, 1989 Carson-Newman 34, Emporia State 20 Jefferson City, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman closed out a decade of championships by defeating Emporia State 34-20 for its 5th NAIA title in seven years. The Hornets scored first on a pass from Mike Burch to Arnie Burcham then Robert Hardy, who would later be named the game’s offensive MVP, scored from 77 yards out on the Eagles’ first play from scrimmage to make it 7-7. ESU again took the lead, but the Eagles again answered with 13 points in the second quarter en route to the victory. Gary Laging, was named the defensive MVP with six tackles and two sacks. NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP December 19, 1987 Cameron 30, Carson-Newman 2 Lawton, Okla. - The Eagles could not overcome a 30-point deficit in losing the NAIA Champion Bowl to Cameron 30-2. Cameron held C-N to 172 yards of offense, recorded a safety in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout.
