Program History - National Championships The National Championships 89 NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP November 29, 1972 East Texas State 21, Carson-Newman 18 Commerce , Texas - Carson-Newman suffered a 21-18 setback in its first football national championship appearance. East Texas State defeated the number-two ranked Eagles in the NAIA Champion Bowl. NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP December 17, 1983 Carson-Newman 36, Mesa College 28 Grand Junction, Colo. - The Eagles defeated Mesa College 36-28 to capture their first NAIA football national championship. C-N exploded for 27 points in the second quarter and led 27-13 at halftime. Carson-Newman added a field goal in the third period and another touchdown in the final stanza to hold off a 15-point second half comeback by Mesa. The Eagles were ranked 12th at the end of the regular season but came from no where to win the national title. The Eagles were the lowest ranked team at the end of the regular season to ever win the national title. NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP December 15, 1984 Carson-Newman 19, Central Arkansas 19 Conway, Ark. - For the second straight season, the Eagles had to battle for the NAIA national championship on unfamiliar territory. C-N and UCA battled evenly for four quarters in what resulted in a Co-National Championship. The Eagles battled from behind all day. After trailing 13-0, C-N took a 14-13 lead on touchdowns from Jeff Joslin and Kenneth Tyson. The Bears made it 19-14 before a Louis Reveiz field goal brought the Eagles within two at 19-17. Allen Stevens then caught Jeff Fusilier in the endzone with 6:46 to go to tie the game at the eventual final score, 19-19. Kenneth Tyson and Allen Stevens were named offensive and defensive players of the game. NAIA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP December 20, 1986 Carson-Newman 17, Cameron 0 Jefferson City, Tenn. - It was the first college national championship event ever played in the state of Tennessee. As a result, the Eagles shutout Cameron 17-0 to capture their third national championship in four years. Top offensive performer Pat Johnson also made it a first as he returned a Cameron punt 80 yards to set a Champion Bowl record and opened the scoring in a defensive struggle. Freshman quarterback Edwin Lowery dashed 54 yards to set up a one yard plunge by Kenneth Tyson. A 45-yard field goal by Louis Reveiz in the third quarter completed the scoring for the Eagles.
