2013 In Review JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – No. 10 Carson-Newman (3-1, 1-1 SAC) was held under 300 yards rushing for the first time in a year as Catawba (3-1, 1-1 SAC) pulled off a 25-22 upset at Mossy Creek. The victory is just Catawba’s third at Burke-Tarr Stadium and the Indian’s first over the Eagles since 2007. “We did not at times practice very well,” C-N head coach Ken Sparks said. “I think sometimes we think that we’re invincible and get a little fat-headed and that we don’t have to do the little things in the world.” The Eagles ran the ball for 236 yards – their lowest total since a 244-yard performance in a loss to Wingate last year. Tyron Douglas (Clover, S.C.) led the way with 113 yards on the ground. Catawba took a 19-16 lead late with 4:16 left in the fourth quarter on a David Burgess seven-yard jaunt up the middle of the field. The Eagles would respond with a TraShaun Ward (Miami, Fla.) 78-yard kickoff return to the Indians’ 12. The short field set the Eagles up to retake the lead on a De’Andre Thomas (Milledgeville, Ga.) quarterback sneak over the left side of the line. However, Curt Duncan (Morristown, Tenn.) banked the extra point off the left upright to make it a three-point game, 22-19. Carson-Newman looked to have the Indians bottled up and the game in hand, but Catawba quarterback Danny O’Brien connected with Bruce Smith on an 18-yard post pattern over the middle of the field to convert on fourth and 10 from the Indians’ own 12. Catawba would drive down to the Eagles’ 12, but a O’Brien lateral out of bounds and a holding penalty backed the Indians back to the 32. O’Brien then hooked up with Tarrats along the left hash to put the go-ahead touchdown on the board. The Eagles Jarrett East-Brown blocked the ensuing extra point – his third career block - to give C-N the opportunity to tie with a field goal. “We didn’t execute our offense well today,” Sparks said. “And then we gave up some big plays on defense. Catawba had a good scheme, they did a good job.” The Eagles nearly did tie the game, but Duncan’s 33-yard attempt sailed wide to the left and the Indians were able to burn the final moments off the clock. O’Brien tossed for 444 yards – the first 400-yard game through the air against the Eagles since Bo Cordell threw for more than 500 yards for Tusculum in 2009. Eien Jacob (Jeanerette, La.) and Anthony Baskin (Detroit, Mich.) both picked off O’Brien twice. Baskin doubled his career high with 12 tackles. The Indians still racked up 464 yards of total offense. However, it’s the second straight year C-N’s defense held Catawba to under 25 yards rushing. 69 Eagles blow past Tornados 41-14 to open SAC play Quickie Statistics (Final) Brevard vs #11 Carson-Newman (Sep 21, 2013 at Jefferson City, TN) BC C-N Score 14 41 FIRST DOWNS 20 21 RUSHES-YARDS (NET) 64-260 52-329 PASSING YDS (NET) 10 77 Passes Att-Comp-Int 7-1-1 9-5-0 TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS 71-270 61-406 Fumble Returns-Yards 0-0 0-0 Punt Returns-Yards 1--3 0-0 Kickoff Returns-Yards 5-115 3-94 Interception Returns-Yards 0-0 1-21 Punts (Number-Avg) 5-32.0 1-51.0 Fumbles-Lost 3-2 4-2 Penalties-Yards 4-29 9-51 Possession Time 36:19 23:41 Third-Down Conversions 4 of 14 7 of 12 Fourth-Down Conversions 1 of 2 1 of 2 Red-Zone Scores-Chances 2-3 4-6 Brevard Carson-Newman Rushing No. Gain Loss Net TD Lg Avg Kelvin Jeter 14 78 3 75 0 11 5.4 Xavier McEachern 14 58 3 55 0 10 3.9 Andre Overholt 8 45 3 42 1 11 5.2 Tanner Wright 16 60 21 39 1 12 2.4 Rushing No. Gain Loss Net TD Lg Avg Tyron Douglas 11 113 1 112 2 64 10.2 Andy Hibbett 13 81 0 81 2 18 6.2 Randall Freeman 7 30 0 30 0 10 4.3 De'Andre Thomas 8 31 2 29 0 8 3.6 Passing C-A-I Yds TD Long Sack Tanner Wright 1-4-0 10 0 10 3 Kevin Herbst 0-2-1 0 0 0 0 Passing C-A-I Yds TD Long Sack De'Andre Thomas 4-7-0 66 0 30 0 Ross Hudson 1-2-0 11 0 11 0 Receiving No. Yards TD Long Jordan Ollis 1 10 0 10 Receiving No. Yards TD Long Luther Walker 3 36 0 14 Aaron Seward 1 30 0 30 Randall Freeman 1 11 0 11 Punting No. Yds Avg Long In20 TB Garrett Nestor 5 160 32.0 44 1 0 Punting No. Yds Avg Long In20 TB Curt Duncan 1 51 51.0 51 0 0 Punt Returns No. Yards TD Long Andre Overholt 1 -3 0 0 Punt Returns No. Yards TD Long Kick Returns No. Yards TD Long Andre Overholt 5 115 0 35 Kick Returns No. Yards TD Long Amaris Fields 2 36 0 23 Marcellas Pope 1 58 0 58 Tackles UA-A Total Sacks TFL Michael Gruber 5-12 17 0.0 0.0 Landon Allen 0-13 13 0.0 0.5 Billy Muscatello 2-9 11 0.0 0.0 Rommie Fairchild 2-7 9 0.0 0.0 Tackles UA-A Total Sacks TFL Javaris Neal 3-5 8 1.5 2.5 Jaycob Coleman 4-3 7 0.0 0.0 Anthony Baskin 3-3 6 0.0 0.5 Greg Beauduy 1-5 6 0.0 0.5 Qtr Time Scoring Play V-H 1st 13:52 C-N - 22 JEFFERSON CITY- Carson-Newman (3-0, 1-0 SAC) built a 34-0 lead in their South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday afternoon and turned in a solid defensive effort as they cruised to a 41-14 victory over Brevard (1-2, 0-1 SAC). Tyron Douglas (Clover, SC) led the Eagles offense with 112 rushing yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns. Andy Hibbett (Corryton, Tenn.) added two scores on 13 carries and 81 yards. The Eagles (3-0, 1-0) finished the game with 406 yards of total offense. The Eagles’ defense was stellar as the starters only allowed 184 yards of offense to the nation’s sixth best rushing attack before exiting the game late in the third quarter. They forced three fumbles, recovered two, had three sacks, seven tackles for loss and an interception. Head coach Ken Sparks said his defense was top-notch against the Tornadoes. “That defense came out and hit some people today and really got after it,” Sparks said. “It’s what’s up front that wins ball games and I thought for the first time in a while that up front, both offensively as well as defensively, I thought we did some great things. That was exciting.” Brevard (2-2, 0-1) was paced by Kelvin Jeter (Gastonia, NC) who had 75 yards on 14 carries and quarterback Tanner Wright (Clayton, Ga.) who toted the ball 16 times for 59 yards. The Tornadoes ran more plays that Carson-Newman, 71 to 61 but finished with only 290 yards. Last season, Brevard’s Andre Overholt and Jordan Ollis both crested 100 yards rushing. Ollis was limited to 32 yards, while the Eagles held Overholt to 45. After two weeks of keeping up five, 20-yard plus plays to both Wayne State and Colorado Mines, the Eagles limited Brevard to a lone 23-yard scamper by Wright. “The kids were determined to get it done today,” Sparks said of his defense’s effort. “They were excited about playing today and it’s been a while since I have heard that much excitement. Our coaches did an unbelievable job with the game plan. I think we beat a pretty good football team and I think Brevard will beat some people before the year is over. This was a good win and I was excited about it.” Michael Gruber (Walterboro, SC) had a game-high 17 tackles for the Tornadoes after picking up 19 last season against the Eagles. The Eagles would need just over a minute to get on the scoreboard as Brandon Baker (Miami, FL) had a 39-yard run for the score. C-N had a number of miscues on the extra point which included a penalty and a bad snap which put the Eagles up 6-0. The next C-N drive took only two plays and 33 seconds as Douglas broke off a 64-yard run and with Duncan’s point after put the Eagles up 13-0. Hibbett’s one-yard dive put the Eagles up 20-0 and Douglas’ second score of the day, this time on a one-yard plunge that capped a 67-yard drive, put the Eagles up 27-0. That would be the way the first half would end. Catawba pulls off upset of 10th ranked Eagles
