Balanced attack propels C-N past Wayne State 55-28 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - No. 17 Carson-Newman (1-0) scored on its first six possessions to cruise to an impressive 55-28 victory over Wayne State (0-1) in the first game of the season for both teams Thursday night at Burke-Tarr Stadium. One of the biggest questions coming into the season for C-N (1-0) was at the quarterback position but sophomore De’Andre Thomas (Milledgeville, Ga.) answered the call, throwing for 213 yards and three touchdowns. The night was a record-setter for Thoams. His 357.14 pass efficiency rating is a single game record and just the third 300+ rating since the stat was kept in 1998. Secondly, his 213 yards through the air mark the first 200-yard passing performance since Alex Good – C-N’s current QB coach – went for 256 yards in the opener against Winona State in 2009. Thomas’ favorite target on the night was Anthony Eubanks (Pendleton, S.C.) who caught his first two touchdowns of his career. Those two receptions covered 97 yards. Steven Isom (Alcoa, Tenn.) grabbed three passes and a score for his second career TD. The Eagles used a balanced attack as they rushed for 363 yards, led by Tyron Douglas (Clover, S.C.) who toted the ball 14 times for 82 yards and three touchdowns. With the three scores, Douglas is a touchdown away from tying Robert Thomas for seventh on the list for career rushing touchdowns at 35. “Offensively, we were a pretty dominant football team in the first half,” C-N head coach Ken Sparks said. “That was a good beginning for De’Andre. He has a long way to go but it was a good start. Overall, there was a lot to be thankful for and to be excited about.” From the beginning of camp, Sparks has said this year’s group of Eagles is special and they reinforced that feeling in the mind of their head coach in Thursday’s game. “This group has responded every time we have called on them. They have some ‘want to’ about them. If you want to and trust the Lord, you can make some things happen,” Sparks said. “This was a good start against a good football team,” Eubanks’ first score of the night came early in the opening quarter when Thomas found him for a 34-yard score. Curt Duncan (Morristown, Tenn.) was good on the extra point as the Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Warriors (0-1) tied the score at 7-7 when Desmond Martin ran in from 21 yards out. Carson-Newman scored on their next two positions as Andy Hibbett (Corryton, Tenn.) rambled in from 43 yards – a career long run - and Douglas made the first of his three trips to the end zone on a six-yard jaunt. The Warriors cut the lead to 21-14 when Carl Roscoe connected with Jay Hayes for a six-yard strike. But from that point on, it was all Eagles as Carson-Newman scored 21 points in about four minutes. Douglas scored a pair of three-yard touchdowns and Thomas threw a 63-yard bomb to Eubanks who capped the scoring drive to give the Eagles a 42-14 lead at the half. 68 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-0) rolled up 508 yards of total offense and withstood a Colorado Mines (1-1) rally to stymie the Orediggers 27-24 Saturday afternoon at Campbell Field. Oredigger kicker Avery Llewellyn missed a 46-yard field goal that would have tied the game with 56 seconds left, thus stunting the CSM rally. “Heart was the difference in this ballgame,” Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks said. “A bunch of kids from Tennessee did not want to lose a ball game today. We had our backs against the wall, but our kids persevered. We didn’t have a lot of weakness in our hearts.” Eleventh-ranked Carson-Newman started the game with a bang. De’Andre Thomas (Milledgeville, Ga.) rolled 73 yards around the right side of the line for a score to finish a two-play, 75-yard drive to begin the game in 35 seconds. Colorado Mines would counter with a Matt Brown 10-yard touchdown run before back-to-back scoring drives capped off by a Tyron Douglas (Clover, S.C.) four-yard TD run and another Thomas scamper, this one from 72 yards away. Douglas’ score was the 35th of his career. That ties Douglas for seventh on the all-time rushing touchdown list with Robert Thomas. The first half was not without missed opportunities. Carson-Newman stopped a Mines’ drive with a Jarrett East-Brown (Burlington, N.J.) interception at the goal line. However, the Eagles would fumble away their ensuing possession. In fact, Carson-Newman coughed the football up seven times, losing three of them. Mines would head into the locker room with momentum after Ty Young snagged a six yard pass from Brown on a slant with 57 seconds left in the first half. The Orediggers would receive the second half kickoff and cap off that drive with a happenstance play for a score. Brown found Jimmy Ellis on a quick slant over the middle of the field at the C-N 15-yard line where Anthony Baskin (Detroit, Mich.) got a cap on the ball to squirt it loose. However, the ball bounded forward up to the five into the awaiting arms of Diamond Gillis who scored easily, waltzing into the left side of the end zone. A Brown sneak on the two-point conversion tied the game. Carson-Newman appeared to have swayed the game in its favor when Jaycob Coleman (Norton, Va.) snatched an interception and returned it 28 yards inside the Oredigger 10. However, C-N botched the snap on the next play to give the ball right back to the Orediggers. “When Jaycob intercepted that pass and gave us the ball inside their 10, then we fumbled it away, it about broke my heart,” Sparks said. “A 10-point cushion at that time would have made it a different ballgame.” Quickie Statistics (Final) Wayne State vs #17 Carson-Newman (Sep 05, 2013 at Jefferson City, TN) WS C-N Score 28 55 FIRST DOWNS 22 27 RUSHES-YARDS (NET) 27-79 71-363 PASSING YDS (NET) 333 213 Passes Att-Comp-Int 46-26-2 10-8-0 TOTAL OFFENSE PLAYS-YARDS 73-412 81-576 Fumble Returns-Yards 0-0 0-0 Punt Returns-Yards 0-0 2-53 Kickoff Returns-Yards 7-221 5-97 Interception Returns-Yards 0-0 2-26 Punts (Number-Avg) 5-41.4 3-37.7 Fumbles-Lost 4-1 3-1 Penalties-Yards 4-52 9-92 Possession Time 27:32 32:28 Third-Down Conversions 4 of 14 8 of 14 Fourth-Down Conversions 3 of 5 2 of 3 Red-Zone Scores-Chances 2-3 3-3 Wayne State Carson-Newman Rushing No. Gain Loss Net TD Lg Avg Desmond Martin 6 30 7 23 1 21 3.8 Toney Davis 9 24 3 21 0 6 2.3 Sean Guinane 5 25 8 17 0 15 3.4 Doug Griffin 2 8 0 8 0 2 4.0 Rushing No. Gain Loss Net TD Lg Avg Tyron Douglas 14 82 0 82 3 23 5.9 Brandon Baker 13 78 0 78 0 11 6.0 Andy Hibbett 9 74 0 74 1 43 8.2 TraShaun Ward 8 37 0 37 0 22 4.6 Passing C-A-I Yds TD Long Sack Carl Roscoe 14-23-1 200 1 52 0 Sean Guinane 12-22-1 133 2 41 0 Passing C-A-I Yds TD Long Sack De'Andre Thomas 8-10-0 213 3 63 0 Receiving No. Yards TD Long Michael Johnson 7 112 0 52 Domin.
