Coaching Staff Denares Waites begins his fourth season as an assistant defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator. Waites was named the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year for his efforts as C-N’s defensive backs and special teams coach in 2013. Waites coached his first All-American in 2013 when Eien Jacob picked off five passes to lead the team. He was second in the SAC with the tally as the transfer garnered honorable mention All-American honors from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He has also been instrumental in the development of TraShaun Ward as a return man. Through two seasons, Ward ranks third in kickoff return yardage and could capture the all-time career record in his junior year. Under Waites tutelage in 2012, safety Issac Kinley earned all-South Atlantic Conference honors. Kinley was C-N’s third leading tackler. As special teams coach, Waites oversaw a kickoff unit that pinned opponents to their own 25-yard lines. The Eagles’ punt coverage teams only allowed four yards a return. Waites was a former standout safety for Carson-Newman for three seasons. Waites was a preseason All-SAC selection John Cryder opens his eighth season at Carson-Newman. The tight end position built depth in 2013 with James Phillips and Keith Reid both starting games for the Eagles. The positition 39 even got involved in the Eagles’ aerial assault as Phillips caught a TD in C-N’s second round playoff game at Lenoir- Rhyne. Cryder’s 2012 was spent tutoring a youthful unit. Keith Reid emerged as the Eagles’ starter at the position working primarly JOHN CRYDER TIGHT ENDS 9th Year Penn State ‘85 as a blocking back. Following the 2011 season, Cryder lost all three of his senior tight ends to graduation, including starters Eric Benton and Matt Cox. Before coming to Carson-Newman, Cryder was a assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at State College High School in Pennsylvania. Cryder was honored with a coaching position at two Pennsylvania High School All-Star games. Cryder is a 25-year veteran of the coaching ranks since graduating Penn State with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemical Education. He earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Carson-Newman. Cryder resides in Jefferson City. twice and helped the Eagles record a 10-1 record in 2007. Waites had a five-year career with the Eagles but saw both his final seasons end early with injuries. In 2007 Waites finished fourth on the team in tackles, led the team in pass break ups with 10, pass defenses with 11 and had one interception.
