2014-15 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS Women’s Basketball The Hampton Lady Pirates finished conference play with a 14-2 mark to clinch their sixth straight regular season title. Hampton’s Malia Tate-DeFreitas was named Player of the Year. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Alexis Udoji and Norfolk State’s Kayla Roberts earned Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively. Savannah State head coach Cedric Baker was selected as Coach of the Year. Savannah State captured its first tournament title with a 65-47 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. Jasmine Norman was selected as the Outstanding Performer and Cedric Baker was named the tournament’s Outstanding Coach. Savannah State fell to South Carolina in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Tournament, 81-48. The Lady Tigers finished the season at 21-11. Hampton earned an at-large bid to the WNIT Postseason tournament. The Lady Pirates defeated Drexel in the first round, 45-42, but fell, 57-39, to West Virginia in the second round. Men’s Basketball The North Carolina Central Eagles clinched the MEAC regular-season title with an unblemished 16-0 record and a 25-8 overall mark to earn its second straight MEAC Men’s Basketball crown. Delaware State’s Kendall Gray was selected as Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Maryland Eastern Shore’s Ryan Andino earned Rookie of the Year honors, while Hawks head coach Bobby Collins was named Coach of the Year. Hampton defeated Delaware State, 82-61, to earn the 2015 MEAC Men’s Basketball Tournament title. It was Hampton’s first championship since 2011 and fifth overall. Deron Powers was named the Outstanding Performer, while Edward Joyner, Jr., earned Outstanding Coach honors. Hampton defeated Manhattan, 74-64, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to top-ranked Kentucky, 79-56. North Carolina Central received an at-large bid in the NIT, falling to Miami, 75-71. Delaware State concluded its season with a 78-57 loss to Radford in the College Basketball Invitational. Norfolk State and Maryland Eastern Shore competed in the Collegeinsider.com tournament. The Spartans lost to Eastern Kentucky, 81-75 and the Hawks fell to High Point, 70-64. Bowling Maryland Eastern Shore registered a 29-1 record and North Carolina A&T State posted a 20-4 mark to earn the MEAC’s northern and southern division titles, respectively. North Carolina A&T State’s Emily Strombeck was named the Player of the Year, while Maryland Eastern Shore’s Thashaina Seraus was selected as the Rookie of the Year. North Carolina A&T State’s head coach James Williams was selected as Coach of the Year. Maryland Eastern Shore won its eighth MEAC Bowling Championship title with a thrilling 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Norfolk State. Seraus was named the Outstanding Performer, while Hawks head coach Kayla Bandy earned Outstanding Coach honors. North Carolina A&T State was selected to compete in the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Intercollegiate Team Championship as the Aggies captured the National crown with a 3-1 win over Robert Morris. Women’s Tennis Howard and Bethune-Cookman finished with perfect records in conference play to earn the 2015 regular season northern and southern divisional titles. Howard finished with a 5-0 conference mark and a 7-7 overall record to win the title. Bethune-Cookman posted a 6-0 MEAC mark and 22-7 overall record to seal the title in the south. Mina Matsuba of Bethune-Cookman was selected the Player of the Year, while teammate Maria Garoz-Moreno earned Rookie of the Year honors. Lady Wildcats head coach Tim Pleasant was named Coach of the Year. Bethune-Cookman defeated South Carolina State, 4-0, to win the 2015 MEAC tournament title. The championship was the first since 2001 and fourth overall for the Lady Wildcats. B-CU’s Alejandra Vidal was named the Outstanding Performer, while Pleasant garnered Outstanding Coach honors. Bethune-Cookman fell, 5-0, to No. 5 Florida in the NCAA Division I first round. Men’s Tennis Morgan State and South Carolina State finished at the top of the conference standings to secure the northern and south divisional titles in 2015. Morgan State posted a 4-0 MEAC mark, while SCSU finished 5-0 in conference play. North Carolina Central’s Danill Geramisov was named Player of the Year, while teammate Kert Kilumets garnered Rookie of the Year accolades. South Carolina State’s Hardeep Judge was selected the Coach of the Year. Due to inclement weather, the 2015 MEAC men’s tennis championship tournament was suspended and South Carolina State was awarded the automatic berth to the NCAA Division I tournament.
