Industrial Space Planning: Post-Occupancy Evaluation Checklist (checklist)

A Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) checklist is a structured tool used to assess how well a designed and renovated industrial space meets the needs of its occupants and the organisations goals after it has been in use for a period.
POE helps identify successes and areas for improvement in the design and functionality of the renovated space. This ensures future renovations and designs are more effective, efficient, and aligned with the needs of the Singaporean workforce and business operations.
Key areas include space functionality, workflow efficiency, environmental conditions (lighting, acoustics, air quality), safety, aesthetics, and how well the space supports the organisations operational needs and employee well-being.
A POE should ideally be conducted 6-12 months after the renovation is completed to allow sufficient time for the space to be used and for any issues to surface. Follow-up evaluations can be done periodically to ensure continued suitability.
The POE process should involve a diverse group of stakeholders, including employees who use the space, management, facility managers, and the interior design or renovation team responsible for the project.
The findings provide valuable insights into what works well and what doesnt, informing design decisions, material selection, and space configurations for future projects. This leads to better-designed, more functional, and more productive industrial spaces.
Common issues include inadequate lighting, poor acoustics, inefficient workflows, lack of storage, insufficient collaboration spaces, and discomfort due to temperature or air quality, all of which can impact productivity and employee satisfaction.
