Minnie's Food Pantry
On April 1, 2008, Dr. Cheryl Jackson established Minnie's Food Pantry in memory of her mother, the late Minnie Hawthorne-Ewing D.D. The organization was named after Dr. Jackson's mother.
Minnie Ewing was a mother, a minister, and a prominent member of the community.
She gave each of her nine children the lesson that it was important to give back to the community and to provide the best that you had. Ms. Minnie served as a model for others to follow, and the entire world was able to observe her efforts. She established her organization in memory of her late mother, Helen Allen, and named it Helen's House. This was the impetus for her daughter Cheryl Jackson to establish an organization under the same name. Ms. Minnie knew what it was like to go hungry as a child because her mother had to walk five miles to get to work every day. She shared with her daughter how there were days when they had virtually nothing to eat, but they always had love, and that is what drives Minnie's Food Pantry to this day.
Hugs and encouraging words were Ms. Minnie's trademarks, and she became famous for both.
She brought a beaming smile with her everywhere she went, and she was the spark that ignited a community to become "Agents of Good." The week before she died away, she delivered her final sermon, during which she stated that she wanted her gravestone to read "She loved God and she loved God's people," and this is exactly what it says. Her legacy will be carried on by her children, grandchildren, and the thousands of volunteers who support Minnie's Food Pantry. Her children and grandchildren continue to be influenced by her daily. She was a fighter, and in her honor, we will carry on the struggle to end world hunger.
It is a privilege for us to keep her heartbeat beating, and we do it by pursuing our objective and participating in our programs.
