New SIGS: Naval Engineer & STEM and USNA Pride |
The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation is pleased to announce its endorsement of two new Shared Interest Groups (SIGs): The Naval Engineer & STEM Advocates (NESA) SIG, bringing together alumni and supporters of the USNA Alumni Association & Foundation focused on highlighting the urgent need for more young Americans to pursue STEM careers, and particularly as Naval Engineers and STEM advocates; and the USNA Pride SIG, connecting Naval Academy alumni who identify as LGBTQ+, and their Allies, with midshipmen who identify as LGBTQ+ and with other support networks and services. SIGs are communities of alumni that communicate and gather around a shared affinity based on shared experience, background, academic affiliation, profession, or other USNA-related interest beyond class year affiliation or regional proximity. Congratulations NESA and USNA Pride! |

Alumni Mentoring Program Turns 10 |
The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation Alumni Mentoring Program (AMP) was formally established in 2012 as the 50th Legacy Gift of the Class of 1969. AMP promotes the USNA culture of alumni helping alumni to achieve “the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government.” Alumni from all classes are encouraged to participate as volunteer mentors, protégés, or both. These mentors and protégés (over 4,500 as of 30 June 2022), matched through an e-mentoring online platform, engage in meaningful, confidential discussions about today's challenges, career and life planning, goal setting, and moving forward toward a higher level of achievement. |

Fall/Winter USNA Alumni Travel |
Summer is over, football season is in full swing, and the travel year is winding down. Our travel team was so fortunate to have the opportunity to host the Normandy to Paris riverboat tour. They hosted a group of 20 Naval Academy alumni ranging from the classes of ’67 to ’93 and the parents of a ’22 grad. We had the honor of visiting the Caen Museum, Omaha beach, the home of Monet, and ended with many breathtaking sites of Paris. Along the route, a group of strangers became amazing friends! That is what USNA Alumni Travel is all about, sharing incredible experiences with new friends that will last a lifetime. Check out the remaining trips for 2022 and 2023. The team looks forward to meeting more alumni during the next adventure. |

Time to Make Your IRA QCD Gift! |
Being older has its benefits! Individuals over 70 ½ can make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly from their IRA to the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation without having to pay deferred income tax on the distribution, and it can satisfy the required minimum distribution for individuals over age 72. This tax-wise method of making a charitable gift is easy. Once your gift is in process, please let Liz Root, Director, Gift Administration, elizabeth.root@usna.com, know your gift is on the way, so you get the credit you deserve. We encourage you to make your IRA QCD gift now to avoid the end-of-year rush. This is especially important for individuals with check-writing privileges for their IRA–those checks must clear the donor’s account by 31 December 2022 to count as an IRA distribution for this tax year. |
