| Super Bowl Flyover by USNA Alumnae |
LT Naomi Ngalle ’16, USN, and LT Saree C. Moreno ’14, USN, spoke about their experience participating in the Super Bowl LVII flyover as U.S. Naval Academy alumnae and naval aviators during the 50th anniversary of the first women to become U.S. Navy pilots. This year was the first time in history an all-female flyover team piloted a Super Bowl flyover. “It’s just exciting representing and reaching out to the next generation of little girls who may be considering aviation,” said Ngalle. “Whether it be on the maintenance side or the flying side, just being able to potentially inspire them … there’s no greater honor.” Both alumnae felt the support from the USNA alumni community as part of the highlights of their experience. “The USNA alumni reaching out and being so supportive has truly been a gem and has lightened up my day,” said Ngalle. “It’s definitely pretty amazing to be a part of this flyover.” |

| Herndon Climb Now Held on 17 May |
The annual Herndon Monument Climb for the Class of 2026 will now occur on Wednesday, 17 May 2023, at 8 a.m. EDT, to coincide with Sea Trials. This will serve as a true culminating event of their plebe year. Scheduling the Herndon Climb as an extension of the current Sea Trials schedule will reinforce the important plebe year concepts of teamwork and mental strength. The Herndon Climb has long been seen as a milestone event for fourth-class midshipmen (freshmen or “plebes”) at the Naval Academy, with their class heralded as “Plebes No More!” at the end of this daunting feat. Demonstrating the teamwork and perseverance they have learned during their first year at the academy, the plebes build a human pyramid to remove the “dixie cup” cover (hat) at the top of the vegetable shortening-covered monument and replace it with an upperclassman’s cover. After successfully completing the Herndon Climb, the freshmen are no longer called plebes but “fourth-class midshipmen.” |

| Family Legacy Buds Garden of Honor |
In just a few months, alumni will have an opportunity to walk through the Miller Family Garden—a beautiful area adorning the landscape outside the new U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation Center. This garden will honor the Miller family’s multi-generational history and connection to the Naval Academy. RADM William C. Miller ’62, USN (Ret.), is a 2014 Distinguished Graduate Awardee and former Academic Dean and Provost for the Academy. He and his wife, Barbara, are the parents, grandparents, and parents-in-law of Naval Academy graduates. Miller served as the executive assistant to Admiral McKee when he was the Superintendent and then as the Dean, Miller helped lead the Academy’s recognition as one of the nation’s leading undergraduate engineering schools. Their son, William “Bill” Miller Jr. ’88, made a Foundation gift to name the new facility’s garden in honor of his father, the other Miller family graduates, and the significance of his family’s many years on the Yard. |

| Protect Yourself From Phishing Attacks |
The U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association & Foundation has noticed an uptick in phishing attempts and our alumni can be part of the solution. Protect yourself and others by remaining vigilant if you notice the following red flags: Emails from unfamiliar sources, requests for private information, requests to click on attachments, links to other website, emails from individuals posing as someone you know, emails containing odd content, misspellings, or incorrect diction. Leverage your innate instinct if something seems suspicious. Avoid making payments on websites that do not begin with https: (the “s” meaning secure). Visit the KnowBe4 website to learn about top phishing techniques used by cybercriminals. |
