JANE MARTIN As much as we like to spotlight our authors at Theatre On Consignment, Jane Martin presents us with a dilemna. There is a real question as to the identity of this mysterious writer, who has been referred to as "America's best known, unknown playwright". The name Jane Martin is widely believed to be a pseudonym. She has never made any public appearances, spoken about any of her works or given any interviews. No biographical details are known about her, and no photograph of Ms. Martin has ever been published. Jon Jory, Artistic Director of the Actors Theater of Louisville, is Martin's spokesperson, though some believe he is the actual writer of these plays. Jory has repeatedly denied this, claiming that "Martin feels she could not write plays if people knew who she was," and "the point in the end is the plays themselves." What we do know is this: she has written a number of terrific, critcally acclaimed plays, including Anton in Show Business, Talking With…, and Cementville. Her other plays include Audition, Flaming Gun of the Purple Sage, Jack and Jill, and Stuffed Shirts.
