Our favorite weather-withered monument has had her fair share of action. So, while she gets a makeover, let's remember her greatest moments in pop culture that aren't standing in the middle of the ocean for 125 years.
- We Blew The Statue Up - The classic scene from the 1968 Planet of the Apes film have been parodied, copied and everything in between from The Simpsons to Spaceballs. But, nothing beats that moment Charlton Heston realizes he's been home this whole time. They blew it up, Heston. They blew it up.
- The Cloverfield Monster Decapitates The Statue - During the heavily hyped J. J. Abrams monster flick, Cloverfield, the creature smacks the Statue of Liberty's head clean off. The head bounces off buildings and slams through the city until finally landing right in front of our protagonists feet. This is the first scene that depicts the seriousness of the situation.
- David Copperfield Makes The Statue Disappear - David Copperfield took to Liberty Island on live television in 1983 to dazzle and shock viewers as well as a live audience. A giant curtain goes up, but, when it comes back down, our gift from the French was no where to be found. The details of the illusion can be found online but, at the time, this trick shocked the nation.
- The Statue Of Happiness Has A Heart - The recreation of the Statue of Liberty in Grand Theft Auto IV was renamed the Statue of Happiness and ironically holds a Starbucks-esque cup of coffee rather than a torch. Gamers with a hint of curiosity are may be able to find the secret entrance to the inside of the statue, which leads of to a real beating heart, representing the heart of the city.
- Miss America Gets Powers From Statue - DC Comics superhero Miss America was under the impression for a long time that she was granted her powers through Lady Liberty herself. Although later it was revealed to be a dream, and she was granted her powers through a more traditional experiment story, we thought for a long time that if you loved America enough the Statue of Liberty would give you super powers.
- Tom And Jerry Steal The Statue's Clothes - During the episode "The Fast and the Furry," Tom and Jerry accidentally snag the Statue of Liberty's dress, tearing it off. Lady Liberty is left in a bikini, which causes Tom and Jerry to momentariness forget their rivalry and ogle over the freedom-loving babe.
- The Statue Assists The Ghostbusters - In order to defeat Vigo the Carpathian, the Ghostbuster's bring a slime-soaked Statue of Liberty to life and pilot it through the streets of Manhattan. They use the statue's torch to break through the museum and knock out Dr. Janosz Poha.
- A Bomb Attack Leaves The Statue In Ruin - The first level of the original Deus Ex starts off inside the statue's base. Once the player leaves the interior, they see that the statue has been heavily damaged and lies in ruin after a previous attack which seems to have happened years before the events of the game.
- The Statue's Torch Is A Giant Neuralyzer - At the end of Men In Black II, K reveals Laura is the Light of Zartha and must leave Earth to save both planets. After Laura leaves on a spaceship, Agent K uses the Statue of Liberty's special hidden feature to erase the entire city's memory.
These were our favorite Lady Liberty moments. What do you guys remember most?
