A traumatized news reporter retreats to a commune for emotional healing and finds everyone there is a werewolf.
It hasn't aged very well, but director Joe Dante's hippie werewolf movie is still good for a hoot and a holler, and the practical effects of the transformation scenes remain pretty damn impressive seeing as that computers hadn't even been invented yet. The Howling might've been more effective if it didn't feel like one big inside joke, but it's an entertaining period piece of sorts - funny, creepy and sexy in that strange '80s way. Dante regular Robert Picardo is especially good as Eddie Quist, a serial killer who delights in wolfing out, and the DVD contains a look at some neat-o stop-motion beasties that ended up not being used in the final film.
Joe Dante (director), Dee Wallace, Robert Picardo, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine, Slim Pickens, Elisabeth Brooks.
Silver bullets or fire, that's the only way to get rid of the damn things.
