Chris: Poor Opie.
I was talking to a buddy today and I said "Opie's had a rough season." And he
said "Opie's had a rough show." No one gets their ass kicked by life more than
him.
Kurt: Yeah, he's
had it rough, man.
Chris: And Ryan
Hurst does tortured really, really well. Can you give us some insight into
what's going on in Opie's head at the end of the season and is that hand injury
going to take away the one thing that guy has left, which is riding a
motorcycle.
Kurt: I don't
think so. I think it's mostly shot in the wrist and it went through. My sense
is it'll be fucked up for a while. I think it has been a rough ride for Opie. I
love the idea of what happened to his marriage with Lyla and he's just starting
to fucking grieve the death of Donna. These guys aren't that emotionally hooked
up and it takes a minute I think. At the end of the season here, my intention
was never to suggest that Opie or Bobby aren't coming back next season. I think
the reality of what happened with Otto had to be played out so it didn't make
sense for Bobby to be out of jail. I was just looking for a way to put him in
the last episode (laughs). I just wanted
to remind people that he's still around. We had Romeo mention about how if the
deal falls or keeps going, he'll be able to find a way to get... you know I've
set that up to be able to get him out. Maybe not episode one, but shortly
thereafter. In my mind, Opie's not gone, but it was a little too neat and
convenient to have him show up and sit-down next to Jax. You know there's too
much that has gone down. It's not that he's gone, it's just he needs to process
this shit. My sense is that he's off on a fucking walkabout for a couple of
episodes and just trying to put it all in place. Then we have some story to
play out with him coming back and what does it look like? Where is their
relationship at? We definitely have some fertile ground to play out with him
and again, I don't know what that looks like yet in terms of story. But I just
knew at the end of the season I didn't want him coming back to that table.
