Hang 'Em High

Release date: August 3, 1968

The Pitch:

A wrongfully accused man survives a lynching and goes after the posse that left him for dead.

Why You Need It:

Because it's a Western, and it stars Clint Eastwood, that's why! Hang 'Em High might not be in the same saloon as an ultra-classic like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, but it's still a model of its kind - a smart, violent revenge tale that never stops to reload. Eastwood plays a lynching survivor who reinvents himself as a lawman and goes after the poor sumbitches what done tried to hang him; while Ted Post's direction isn't as economical as Eastwood's nor as imaginative as Sergio Leone's, it still makes the grade for its grittiness and occasional flamboyance. You also get the late Dennis Hopper as a crazed prisoner known as "The Prophet."

Talent:

Ted Post (director), Clint Eastwood, Inger Stevens, Ed Begley, Pat Hingle, Dennis Hopper, Ben Johnson, Charles McGraw, Ruth White, Bruce Dern, Alan Hale, Jr., Arlene Golonka.
