Our Most Favorite Apes on the Planet

Here are our favorite ape characters from the Planet of the Apes movies, from A (Aldo) to Z (Zira). "C," of course, stands for Caesar, the star of the latest chapter in the sci-fi franchise, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

We love to quote Charlton Heston ("Get your stinking paws off me, you..." ah, you know the rest) and James Franco is pretty cool as a surfer-dude genetic scientist, but the real stars of the Planet of the Apes movies are the... well, apes. Here are our favorite simians from this amazing sci-fi franchise, from Planet of the Apes (1968) to Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011).

Aldo

First Appearance: Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

Last Appearance: Battle For the Planet of the Apes (1973)

Actor: David Chow (Conquest); Claude Akins (Battle

Aldo was first mentioned by Cornelius and Zira in Escape From the Planet of the Apes, who said in their 1970s interview that the Ape uprising would be led by "Aldo," the first ape to say "No." This "No" would occur 500 years later in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, when Aldo, a chimp messenger for Governor Breck, exclaimed "No!" when he was being beaten by guards. In Battle For the Planet of the Apes, Aldo (now a gorilla, not a chimp, but whatever), is seen as a powerful -- and corrupt -- Ape leader, and a thorn in the side of the more humane Caesar.

Ari

First Appearance: Planet of the Apes (2001)

Last Appearance: Planet of the Apes (2001)

Actor: Helena Bonham Carter

Ari was the daughter of Senator Sandar, something of a "problem child" who strived for a world where apes and humans lived as equals. Seen as a hopeless idealist by her peers and the authorities, she despised the way humans were treated and wasn't afraid to speak publicly about her radical beliefs. She ended up being an ally (and something of an odd love interest) to astronaut Leo Davidson after he crash-landed on the Planet of the Apes.

Attar

First Appearance: Planet of the Apes (2001)

Last Appearance: Planet of the Apes (2001)

Actor: Michael Clarke Duncan

Colonel Attar was the field commander of the Ape Armies and the loyal right-hand ape to General Thade. While he took pleasure in hunting humans like his General, Attar was also deeply religious, a devoted follower in the worship of the first ape, Semos. Indeed, Attar demanded everyone bow their heads at dinner in order to pray to Semos, and his religious devotion would be key in the eventual rift between himself and the cruel Thade. Attar was also the one who had to deliver the unfortunate line, "Get your stinking hands off me, you damn dirty human!"
