Old folks discover a perpetual Fountain of Youth when strange alien pods show up in their swimming pool.
Call it what you will - cheesy, unapologetically sentimental, shamelessly manipulative - yes, it's all of those things, but, ultimately, Cocoon's got a heart the size of Florida, and that's enough to make it something of a sci-fi mini-masterpiece. Ron Howard was still getting his feet wet (literally) as a director, and he assembled an amazing cast - everyone here does some of the best work of their careers; some at the beginning, some near the end. Cocoon is a prime example of a sci-fi story that transcends its somewhat preposterous elements by including real human emotion and motivation - they really don't make 'em like this any more.
Ron Howard (director), Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley, Brian Dennehy, Steve Guttenberg, Tahnee Welch, Hume Cronyn, Jack Gilford, Jessica Tandy, Maureen Stapleton, Barret Oliver.
