When we first see John Matrix, he's carrying an entire tree on his shoulder. For no particular reason - he just chopped down a tree and is now carrying it back to his secluded mountain home. Maybe he needs firewood for the next hundred years. Maybe he's going to build a guest house for the guests he never gets. It doesn't matter - the point is, he's carrying an entire tree on his shoulder as if it were nothing. So what blasted idiots would dare kidnap this man's daughter and threaten to kill her if he doesn't overthrow the newly elected President of Val Verde? That doesn't really matter, either, as all of those blasted idiots - and most of the population of Val Verde itself - soon end up dead at the hands (and bullets and explosives) of this man.
