Del 'Gary' Spooner is a detective with the Chicago Police Department circa 2035, a man who despises robots and their integration into society as servants and companions. Spooner's prejudice comes from something of a personal tragedy, as he was rescued by a robot from an automobile accident while a girl in another car drowned; the robot rescued Spooner instead of the girl because it computed that Spooner had a higher probability of survival. Spooner, now plagued with survivor's guilt and a false mechanical arm, is called in to investigate the death of Alfred Lanning, a robotics scientist and founder of U.S. Robotics. Spooner believes that Lanning died at the hand of an independent, experimental robot known as Sonny - though his investigation ends up revealing much more than just a "malfunctioning" robot.
