Dark Knight Returns (1986)
Frank Miller got to tell the Batman story he always wanted to with this 4-part mini that separated the Batman from the Batboys. Years after Bruce Wayne retires, an upswing in crime brings him back, more vengeful and driven than ever.
Batman: The Killing Joke (1988)
If people had doubts as to the Joker's madness in the past, this book by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland cemented his status as the craziest of the crazies by crippling Batgirl, torturing Commissioner Gordon, and even sharing a joke with Batman.
Batman: Knightfall (1993)
Part of a two-year, three-part crossover with "Knightquest" and "KnightsEnd," this story saw the biggest Arkham Asylum breakout on record, the breaking of Batman's back, and the introduction of the unstable Azrael as the new Batman. A little dated, but it sets up the modern Batman mythos.
