The Collectionist: Blu-ray DVDs You Should Own Already

You're not taking full advantage of the Blu-ray experience if you don't own these discs.

If you've just gotten a Blu-ray player (or if you've won a PS3 Slim courtesy of UGO -- you're welcome!), these are the Blu-ray discs you've got to have in your collection if you want to be serious about high-definition.

Planet Earth

The 2006 nature series was the most expensive nature documentary ever commissioned by the BBC, and the first one to be filmed in high-definition. That means you can bear witness to the natural world in stunningly scary detail -- like a Great White chasing a seal or the world's largest pile of bat guano.

Star Trek

Zoe Saldana in high-def? Yes, please. Undoubtedly the most action-packed of the Star Trek films, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot looks even better on Blu-ray. The vivid colors of young Kirk and Spock's space adventures come through in delightful detail -- from the expansive space scenes to extreme close-ups -- you won't care about the continuity.

The Matrix

The 1999 sci-fi action film was the DVD to get back in the day, and of course it should make your Blu-ray list. Just compare the old standard Matrix DVD to the Blu-ray one and you'll immediately notice the difference. The stylized bullet-dodging and shiny black pleather outfits come through picture-perfect on the high-def version. In fact, it looks so good, we'll just forget about the sequels for now.
