Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC)
One day DC decided that its internal continuity was just too confusing, so they scrapped it all in a 12-issue miniseries and started pretty much from scratch. Both Supergirl and the Flash died (for the time being) and the DCU was infinitely changed...until they changed it again later. $19.79
The Death and Return of Superman (DC)
Superman dying brought newfound public attention to comic books, and luckily the entire saga is collected in trade. Pick up the phonebook-sized follow-up Superman: Doomsday for the continuation of the story. $75
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (DC)
Writer/artist Frank Miller put a post-modern spin on the classic DC characters in this tale of a retired Bruce Wayne coming back to battle a corrupt Superman. Follow-up Dark Knight Strikes Again is worth picking up too. $10.19
