Science-fiction writers like to play it safe when it comes to prognosticating. In the future, mankind will be on the receiving end of all the juicy technology they love to write about, setting their super-technologically advanced stories in chronological settings like the 22nd Century, 2266 (Star Trek TOS) or 2552 (Halo). But now and then a sci-fi auteur comes along and predicts that the future is very nearly now, and with it will come the technology that will make life at least a little more interesting. Here are 11 such tech predictions that should've come true by now, according to the sci-fi stories that predicted them, and the year we should've been blessed by these techno-miracles.

1982 - Universe's Most Depressing Alien Mothership Comes To Earth: District 9

Sure, having those poor, sad, cat food-addicted bug aliens come to Earth might not have been so stellar, but the technology they brought with them holds a world of promise! Too bad none of us humans can use it. SPOILER ALERT! We learn how to use it! It just involves losing our humanity and becoming aliens ourselves. A small price to pay for über-laser weapons and kickass power suits.
