Presumably someone at Marvel noticed the mythological creature discrepancy and decided to go ahead and make a character based on the manticore as well. But like Griffin, Manticore looks nothing like the traditional version, which is said to be a red lion with a human head. Instead, the villain is a legless guy in a suit that makes him look like some kind of giant, vicious capybara. As terrifying as it is ridiculous.
