When it comes to football flicks, they usually come in two flavors: hard-hitting comedy or high-tension drama. In the case of the original 1974 Longest Yard—starring the inimitable Burt Reynolds—they go with comedy in the vein of Reynolds other flicks Smokey and the Bandit or Cannonball Run. But don't expect a silly football movie, this one's set in a prison with disgraced pro Reynolds bringing a team of inmates together to play the jerk guards in some of the most smash mouth football ever seen on film!

1993's Rudy starring Sean Astin and Jon Favreau lands pretty high on the list of all-time greatest sports movies which, as you might expect, means it's very high on the football list. The real-life story of underdog Rudy Reuttiger who hustles his way onto the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football field can't help but get you pumped up as he overcomes everything from Dyslexia and not actually being a student at Notre Dame to not making the team and almost not being able to dress. None of it gets Rudy down though and he comes through in the end! We're getting pumped up just writing about the movie!

A mostly overlooked gem, The Replacements imagines what would happen if a bunch of pro football teams you've never heard of went on strike and the league brought in a bunch of people from other sports to keep the league rolling. The movie has a great cast including Keanu Reeves, Gene Hackman, Orlando Jones, Jon Favreau, Faizon Love, Rhys Ifan, Art LaFleur and plenty more. As you might expect, it's another underdog story about a guy - Reeves -making good, but with plenty of fun moments and good ideas (getting a soccer player to kick and sumo wrestlers as linemen).

Like Rudy, 2002's Remember the Titans is another dramatic pigskin flick based on true events. This time the story focuses on Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) as he tries to unite a team divided by racial tension in 1971 Virginia. The film absolutely excels in its attempts to show the racial tension of the time and Boone's incredible ability to bring those young people together. Do yourself a favor and give the Blu-ray a watch.

Friday Night Lights began life as a nonfiction book in 1990 by H.G. Bissinger. That book was turned into a 2004 film and eventually the critically acclaimed NBC series which kicked off in 2006. The series focuses on high school football in Dillon, Texas where the sport is a way of life for many, specifically the life of coach Eric Taylor played by Kyle Chandler. Dubbed by some as the best sports related show ever to grace television screens, the show will be going into its final season later this year. The first four seasons are currently available on DVD for you to catch up on or relive the show's best moments.
Season 1 $16.49, Season 2 $15.99, Season 3 $15.99, Season 4 $20.49
