Best Beer / Food Pairings

We tell you what beer to drink with what food in our feature of best Beer / Food Pairings

While some of the more urbane among us may prefer a little sip of chardonnay at the end of an evening, we've always been beer men. And there's never been a better time to be an aficionado of the golden brew, as the wide variety of micros and craft brews on the market means we have more options than ever for our quaffing pleasure. One recent development in beer appreciation has been the practice of pairing specific beers with specific foods - just as wine drinkers sip whites with fish and reds with beef, so to do beer drinkers adjust their consumption based on the meals in front of them. But beers have a much wider taste and consistency variation than wine, so learning what to do is a little more complicated. But fear not, true believer - we've prepared a guide to food and beer that will let you seem like an expert. Let's get quaffing!

Sushi

Most Asian countries are not known for their beer production - the formaldehyde-laced, watery swill that comes from Thailand, Vietnam, and China is barely drinkable at best, even though their native cuisines would be perfectly pared with a number of good brews. However, one country stands head and shoulders above the rest of the continent when it comes to beer: Japan. During the Edo period, the Dutch opened beer halls on Nippon, and the natives developed a taste for the foamy beverage, eventually developing their own recipes and breweries. Sushi, that combination of vinegared rice and raw fish, has become the most eaten Japanese culinary export, but it's a little-known fact that the traditional beverage to drink with your sushi is actually not sake, but beer! The best accompaniment to the kick of wasabi and ginger, as well as the subtle flavorings of the fish, is a light ale. The Japanese microbrewery Hitachino Nest is one of the country's most renowned beermakers, and their delicious white ale, with its overtones of fruit, wheat, and hops is easily the best thing to accompany your sushi meal - especially if you're eating it off of a naked lady. They still do that, right?
