The Abyss

By now we've all seen (in 3-D, likely) the beauty, splendor and mediocre acting that is Avatar. Well, before James Cameron "changed filmmaking forever" with blue cat-people and hair-tentacle genitalia, he changed filmmaking forever with intense storytelling, superb casting and amazing visual effects. Avatar will no doubt get an extras-filled Blu-ray release (hopefully complete with 3-D specs), but it's a crime against nature (on THIS planet!) that the Oscar-winning film The Abyss doesn't yet have the super-hi-def treatment.

Alien Quadrilogy

Featuring groundbreaking work from directors like Ridley Scott, David Fincher and the aforementioned Mr. Cameron, the Predator-less Alien films -- particularly the first two -- have redefined sci-fi action movies since the freakin' 1970s! So why in the name of Xenomorphs do we not get to see chestbursters in glorious 1080p?

Back To The Future

Michael J. Fox made a career out of playing a teenage slacker time traveler for over five years (and a werewolf, too!), and it all began with this amazingly well-directed and exciting flick. Featuring just enough science to entice the sci-fi crowd (but not so much that it turns off the mass audience), the real gem of this movie is the story-telling. But to see Hill Valley and the Enchantment Under the Sea dance on Blu-ray would be pretty heavy.
