Memorable Vince McMahon Moments

We look at the Memorable Vince McMahon Moments in wrestling history.

by K. Thor Jensen

If we had our way, August 24th would be a national holiday. Why? Because it's the birthday of Vince McMahon, the greatest genius the world of sports entertainment has even known. Born to WWWF promoter Vincent J. McMahon in Pinehurst, North Carolina, young Vince grew up primarily raised by his mother and a string of abusive stepfathers. He did not meet his real dad until the age of twelve, at which point he set out to follow in his father's footsteps and control the wrestling universe. In tribute to the birth of a great man, some sixty-three years ago, we take a trip down Memory Lane with Mr. McMahon, from his early days as a gawky, nervous announcer to his present incarnation as the millionaire megalomaniac with balls the size of grapefruits. These are the Memorable McMahon Moments, and we expect you to have them memorized by the 24th.

Until the late '90s, Vince had primarily been a benign character on WWF TV, gamely struggling his way through the play-by-play and keeping his real personality off the air. All that changed after the shocking events of Survivor Series in 1997. As a departing Bret Hart wrestled Shawn Michaels in a match that was supposed to end in a disqualification, things ended up going very differently. When Shawn locked Bret in the Sharpshooter, the Canadian's own trademark hold, the referee told the timekeeper to ring the bell and award the match to Michaels, despite Hart not submitting. Shawn immediately fled to the backstage area with the belt, and the Montreal fans knew that something very strange had just happened. The architect of this plan? None other than Vince McMahon himself, who was worried about Hart taking the belt with him. The incident caused a lifetime of bad blood between McMahon and Hart, but it also led to the creation of "Mr. McMahon."
