Patriotic Moments in Wrestling

We look at the Patriotic Moments in Wrestling.

by K. Thor Jensen

There are few things in this world as indisputably all-American as professional wrestling. Despite the popularity of sports entertainment in countries like Mexico and Japan, the beating heart of grappling lies here in the States. And so it's no surprise that wrestlers, promoters and bookers often appeal to our patriotic instincts to add a little flavor to a match or angle. In this piece, we delve back into wrestling history to find the five moments that made us proudest to be living in the land of the free and the home of the brave. From grass-roots political organizing to good old-fashioned Commie bashing, we celebrate our Country's birthday with a few of the most patriotic moments in wrestling.

Bill Watts vs Russia

Say what you like about the booking career of Bill Wats - the old-school storyteller may have made some bizarre decisions, like banning moves from the top rope - but he sure knew how to get an audience fired up. At the high point of the Cold War, when the threat of Russian attack was at its peak, Watts had a pair of unstoppable Russkie heels in his promotion, Nikolai Volkoff and Ivan Koloff, and managed by the traitorous Eddie Gilbert the pair were unstoppable. After the duo had defeated untold legions of jobbers, knocking them into unconsciousness and draping the Russian flag over them, Watts could take no more. Charging the ring, the retired wrestler banned any further displays of Commie pride and backed it up with haymaker punches to the hated Russian heels.
