Martin Kampmann is a tough guy. He's a Danish kickboxing champion who trains with Randy Couture, and he had won nine fights in a row going in to Saturday's fight with former King of Pancrase Nate Marquardt. None of this was apparent once the fight started. Marquardt simply steamrolled the Xtreme Couture fighter in just over a minute, surprising everyone by engaging the kickboxer on his feet. I expected Nate to try for a takedown. When he knocked him loopy with a headkick instead, I was shocked.
"If I had an opportunity for a takedown I was going to take it. But my style is not to take it standing and it's not to take it to the ground," Marquardt told UGO.com after the fight. "Basically any time I can attack, any time someone gives me an opening, I'm going to take it. I don't care if they're a master on the ground, I'll take them down. I don't care if they are the best on their feet, if there's a knockout punch there, I'm gonna take it."
The win makes Marquardt relevant again in the Middleweight division. He's a win away from a rematch with champion Anderson Silva, a bout the Team Jackson fighter desperately wants.
"That's my goal, that's my dream. To become the Middleweight Champion," Nate said. "It's going to happen eventually. I've worked hard to get where I am now. My loss against Silva helped me get where I am now. I'll take it when it comes. I definitely want that fight. But at this point I'm just
being patient."
