Day 5 of CMJ 2007 was a bust, mainly cause I got sick due to lack of sleep and going to bed exhausted and drenched from NYC rain. I still want out like a jackass to see one young promising rap artists from pistolvania.
See what makes this young artists so important for the future rap, read about my overall feeling of CMJ, and grab the extra performance vidgets below!
I was bedridden by Day 5 of CMJ 2007. Yet, I was still foolish enough to drag myself over to Club 205 to see Wiz Khalifa. Wiz Khalifa is a young rapper out of Pennsylvania, or "pistolvania," as he calls it. Progressive hip-hop DJ Green Lantern prepared the medium sized crowd by playing the style of rap music usually in contention: conscious vs. gansta rap. I would have enjoyed Wiz Khalifa more If my health was better but I was glad I came to see him perform his new single "Youngin' on his grind," a heavy midtempo beat with electro influenced synths. After that song, I headed back home with a pounding headache and rekindled my relationship with the lady of dreams.
Overall impressions of CMJ 2007: It was cool. It does not seem to be rap/hiphop friendly but that could just be the sign of the times for college radio. It was somewhat organized except for the moments when my photo pass meant nothing in regards to recording. I wish someone told me something about that! I had a great time overall and choose the right bands to cover. I hope you feel the same way and may the performance vidgets below be a testament to the power of awesome music.
