What would a film starring Sly Stallone directed by Zack Snyder be about? I can tell you.
Last night I was fairly wowed by the epic special effects of Zack Snyder's forthcoming Legend of the Guardians. The director of Watchmen, 300 and the forthcoming Sucker Punch was in town to show us eighteen minutes of footage and, as is very much his way, make himself available to anyone who had questions.
As the evening started I saw him and his producer/wife Deborah standing near a displayed owl. Being the shy guy I am I approached him and our conversation went something like this:
"Hey, Zack, what's with the owls?"
Snyder started telling me about how when he was deciding whether or not to adapt the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series of young adult novels, there actually was an owl that showed up on his property. "It was an omen!" he said. Our discussion continued and sounded a lot like:
Me: Is it weird promoting this and promoting Sucker Punch simultaneously?
Zack: Well, it's not like I get the two projects confused!
Me: They are different, I grant you - you psyched for Comic-Con?
Zack: Always. What else is going to be there this year?
Me: Lots. All the cool stuff AND Sly. Frickin' Sly is going to be there! How awesome is that?
Zack: Oh, right, The Expendables. You know, I worked with him.
Me: What?
Zack: Yeah. A long time ago, gosh - I haven't thought about this in a long time, but I did a commercial with him.
Me: Wait. Back up. What was it for?
Zack: It was for, it was for prosciutto.
Me: You mean, the ham?
Zack: Yeah. It was for . . .some Italian prosciutto company. I can't remember the name. It had a funny name.
Me: Was he, like, a chef? Or was he beating up hams?
Zack: No. It was - it was all set on a boat. There was this steamer coming in and everyone was talking about this bad guy that was coming. And he played the bad guy, with a ridiculous name. He was called Boobie. And everyone is going around all worried asking, "where is Boobie?" and then Sly comes in.
Me: Was this in Italy?
Zack: No, it was in Los Angeles. We shot for 3 days in Los Angeles.
Me: In English?
Zack: In English, but I think they dubbed it into Italian.
Me: Those guys all have their own specialized dubbers in each country, that are beloved.
Zack: Yeah, when they hear the actor's actual voice it is like "who is this?"
I was about to ask where I could dig up a copy of this film, but he was pulled away. So I leave it to you, dear reader. Contact your cousin's ex-girlfriend who is living in Florence and find me a link to this on the Italian version of YouTube.
