Screenriters Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are nothing short of comedy geniuses. In the early 60's, the western dominated TV: shows about farmhands, sheriffs, steam locomotives and horse thieves were all over the place, nearly twenty four hours a day. Someone had the brilliant idea to do something a bit more lighthearted: A smooth-talking gambler who just happens to be an ace with the 6-shooter. The show was a success and made James Gardner a star. Now, strap yourself in and flash forward to the early 90's where Richard Donner, the king of the eighties action film (the man behind Lethal Weapon) gets a chance to get a crack at revising the old west franchise with Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster and, yes, James Gardner. Maverick features all the classic staples of Western action: Runaway stagecoaches, gun fights, fistfights and gambling, which are mixed with the right degree of tongue in cheek to create the perfect mix of ha-ha's and ooh-ahs!
