In my conversation with James Cameron, I didn't just put him on the spot about Terminator Salvation. I made sure to (respectfully) confront him about an aspect of Avatar that has been irking some people since the first teaser trailer.
From "your REAL legs" to "this is OUR land," some have worried that the dialogue in Avatar may be a bit on the nose. But isn't Cameron smart enough to know exactly what he's doing?
Jordan Hoffman: I have a bold question, but you're a plain-spoken gent and you recognize that I'm a fan of the work, so I think you can handle it. However, the one comment that some naysayers have, the few naysayers that are out there -
James Cameron: They're getting lonelier and lonelier by the way.
JH: They'll say something like, 'you know the dialogue lacks some nuance, it's on-the-nose,' and to that I say, 'there's so much stuff going on in this movie that if Aaron Sorkin or John Sayles were hired to do a pass on this movie it would baffle most people.'
JC: Exactly. That's the issue. The story would be very hard to follow if we weren't fairly clear about it. I believe being clear with the dialogue and let the actors spin or put some emotional weight behind it, or what Sam calls, 'bounce it,' where you do something a little unexpected with it. I believe in actors. And you know, I don't like to get too expositional, but I do think clarity is important.
