The Lion King to Return with Additional Dimension

Disney has plans to rerelease The Lion King in digital 3D on September 16, 2011 because they know you'll shell out for it.

When The Lion King originally saw release way back in 1994, we always thought it was missing two things: Wacky animal characters and 3D.

Just kidding! The Lion King was lousy with zany anthropomorphic animals and 3D is a totally unnecessary gimmick used to inflate box office returns.

But none of that is stopping Disney from rereleasing one of their most beloved films in digital 3D on September 16, 2011. This fall, fans will be able to shell out upwards of $15 to put on a pair of ill-fitting plastic glasses and watch a 17-year-old movie in a format that makes it darkier, murkier and all-around less pleasant. Progress.

The Lion King was a huge success for Disney, earning $783.8 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing hand drawn animation film of all time. With its impending return to theaters and elevated ticket prices, Disney will most certainly build upon The Lion King's record, which seems profoundly unneccessary, as no one makes hand drawn animation films anymore.
