What better way to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back and kick-off UGO's World of Tomorrow week than with a hats-off to a deep-cut character that only borderline sociopaths even recognize?
No better way!
So roll up your sleeves and have fun, while checking out what else we brought back to you from the future.
Faster Dengar...Swoop! Swoop!
Dengar was born on the same planet as the much more famous, Han Solo. There he took to fixing and eventually racing the vehicles know as Swoops (very fast hover bikes). Dengar was so talented that he gained various sponsorships and a large fan base. The thrill of the race would elevate him to pop idol status, but this would not be enough for the young and still non-horrible Dengar. Eventually he would move onto private races that would boost the danger level. It would also put him on a collision course with Han Solo.
Solo that lovable jerk.
Dengar was at the top of his game, but the rumblings about a new young hotshot swoop jockey would only get louder. Upon meeting this new young hotshot, Han Solo, things would change. In the short story, Payback: The Tale of Dengar and The Essential Guide to Characters, we find out of the details of this fateful race and it ain't pretty. During their race Solo brought his swoop down directly in the face of Dengar. His face was burned horribly and Dengar crashed into some crystalline plant that impaled his brain and robs him of emotion.
Boohoo! Solo wins the big race and leave it to Dengar to try and steal his thunder. What a cry baby loser! Shooting Greedo, burning people's faces. . .this Solo is even cooler than I thought.
We will rebuild him. We will make him better!
After the swoop accident, Dengar would have been dead if it weren't for the handiwork of Empire scientists.
According to the short story Payback: The Tale of Dengar, after the accident he was rebuilt by Imperial scientists and turned into a heartless cyborg, their very own Six Million Dollar Man. Sadly Dengar wouldn't get a jaunty jumpsuit like Lee Majors, nor would he get a female bionic comrade. Instead old Dengar would get a computerized hypothalamus that turned him into a cold-blooded killer.
