I guess we're just going to have to accept the fact that a Stretch Armstrong movie is coming whether it makes any sense or not. I mean, I'm assuming the thing has to play as an origin story; some strange accident gives a guy stretch powers. But is his name actually Stretch Armstrong before the incident? Or maybe Stretch is a nickname he earns after his first heroic act? I already feel bad at the amount of thought I'm giving this after two seconds, so you can imagine how the actual filmmakers must feel.
Regardless, the project now has a director in Rob Letterman, one of two directors of Monsters vs. Aliens and the sole director of the upcoming Jack Black version of Gulliver's Travels. So reports Deadline New York, who also say that Nick Stoller, writer/director of Forgetting Sarah Marshall has come on board to do a rewrite. It's sort of too bad they don't turn the whole project over to him as Stoller's name at least carries some comedic weight against Letterman's.
Taylor Lautner is still set to star as Mr. Armstrong, most likely as a high school student who learns about his crazy ability ends up saving the day. They could surprise us yet, though, and create some kind of bizarre fantasy world where having a stretching guy just makes sense. That sounds much cooler, but still a quarter as much fun as, say, the Fantastic Four.
