Earlier this year, theater chain giants Regal and AMC joined forces to create a new distribution company, Open Road, installing former Lionsgate head Tom Ortenberg at the head of their unholy union. Now, the distributor has set the release date for its first film, Killer Elite, a star-heavy action flick seemingly designed in a lab to compel theatergoers to shove popcorn into their gaping maws, because frankly, that's where the money is anyway.
The film stars Jason Statham as a former special ops agent who comes out of retirement to rescue Robert De Niro, who will be chewing the scenery as Statham's mentor. To get De Niro back, Statham will have to kick and shoot his way through three assassins and probably show off his abs a couple times. The leader of the trio of assassins and the film's major heel will be played by Clive Owen.
Honestly, it'd be crazy to tell this guy to keep his shirt on.
The film, which is oddly based upon a true story, will make a gajillion-bazillion dollars and garner snarky, dismissive reviews from very serious movie critics and your asshole friends that have no idea how to have a good time on September 23, 2011.
