With glasses that large, you'd figure that Martin Scorsese could see the world in 4-D, so it's hardly a stretch to imagine that the director would eventually jump onboard the 3D bandwagon. Turns out that he will, in fact, and that he'll start with his very next movie, The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

According to Variety, the film has been dated for release on December 9, 2011 and will mark Scorsese's first foray into the cinematic third dimension. Certainly, Scorsese is one of the finest directors working today, and so I'd only expect the very best usage of the technology from his capable hands, but I can't help but be a little disappointed when I watch these masters of narrative and storytelling jump onboard a gimmick that threatens to have the opposite effect from what they intend - to pull you into a story by physically putting something between your eyes and the screen.

About the film itself, Variety claims:

Based on Brian Selznick's best-selling children's book, story is set in 1930s Paris and centers on a 12-year-old orphan named Hugo, who lives in a train station and must finish what his late father started by solving the mystery of a broken robot.
