Hot on the heels of directing the comics adaptation Red, director Robert Schwentke has been hired by
Universal to helm R.I.P.D., which
stands for "Rest In Peace Department". In April producer Neal Moritz broke the
project to Collider and also announced the star as Green Lantern's Ryan Reynolds.
According to ComingSoon (via Variety) the film is based on a
Dark Horse comic about a police department made up of dead people, and
centering on a new recruit/old timer pairing, except the new recruit is newly
dead and the old timer is hundreds of years old.
Having never heard of the title, it dawned on me that with
most of the big comic properties like Spider-Man, X-Men, and Watchmen already having been adapted, the studios are
scrambling for more obscure titles to bring to the big screen. This tactic has
worked before; many people are unaware that Men In Black was originally an obscure comic published by Aircel
in the early 90s.
With this in mind, check out our inspired list of obscure comic books in need of cineamtic adaptations. Three words: Roller Skate Man.
