But even explorers of our stature shy away from certain locations. Spots on the map that reek of a danger most foul. Places no airline flies, no cruise ship sails to, no Tara Reid will ever be photographed in. Places like Barrow, Alaska, with it's vampire-infested month of darkness, for one. Although, our trip there for 2007's blockbuster 30 Days of Night actually turned out pretty fun. What follows are eleven other destinations that your travel agent won't tell you about - unless your travel agent is Satan. Silent Hill
The quiet Northeastern town of Silent Hill may not look like much from the outside, but stick around too long and you'll find yourself having some trouble leaving. With a sordid history involving a secret Satanic cult and witch burnings, the psychic wreckage that results twists the little town into a foggy, horrifying morass of terrifying creatures and unimaginable terror. Christophe Gans' reinterpretation of the Konami video games stays faithful to the original series, but adds some clever elements of his own, including references to the real-life town of Centralia, Pennsylvania, where coal fires have been burning under the ground for 45 years. The foggy, ash-filled town of Silent Hill was ably replicated by the film crew in small towns in Ontario, Canada. A sequel has been announced, but without Gans or screenwriter Roger Avary attached, and we're already packing our suitcases for another trip to Silent Hill.
