Ryan Reynolds is the Green Lantern. Yes, this is big news, as DC and Warner Brothers have yet to bring any of the rest of the Justice League besides Batman and Superman to the big screen. The fact that it is far enough along to name the lead means that it is actually happening. Now that we do know that Reynolds will be assigned to Sector 2814, there are many questions that need to be answered.
First of all, though we have all assumed it already, will this Lantern be Hal Jordan? According to Marc Guggenheim, the comic-book writer that has penned drafts for this movie, the answer is "yes." He wants to make Green Lantern as true to the comic as he can, concentrating on the Silver Age origins of the character. I'm guessing that it will not be over the top comedy. However, with the sense of humor that Ryan Reynolds is known for delivering, we'll get a decent amount of one-liners and smart ass ideas on how to use that ring. I don't expect giant green pies or seltzer water to the face.
Will this be a step towards the JLA movie? I'm guessing they won't be touching that just yet, but they'll probably leave the world open enough to hopefully accommodate such a notion. Are they going to reference Superman or Batman as already existing in this universe? One can only hope, even as a passing nerd-nod, but it is too early to tell how they are going to angle this film. Guggenheim has said that he wants to have Clark Kent cameo in this film, but we all know things like that can change at any time. Hell, remember the Captain America silhouette and shield in The Incredible Hulk? If you do, you saw it on the DVD and Blu-ray as a deleted scene, and something like that could easily happen in Clark's case.
What does this mean for Deadpool? Well, we all know that Ryan Reynolds has been more psyched to be Deadpool than anything else we've had him attached to in Rumor Land, including The Flash. While he may be better suited for the personality of the Merc with a Mouth, he stands to make more money and a better career choice by being a Green Lantern. Even if he is still in line to play Wade Wilson, I'm really doubting that he'll get the opportunity to do it again, especially if Green Lantern is big bucks at the box office. Neither Fox nor Warner Brothers would likely enjoy having him in two comic book franchises at the same time.
I have my own opinions on what this film is going to wind up being like, but I'm going to channel all the comic-book fanboy optimism I have left in me to hope for the best and anticipate an awesome Kilowog and Sinestro. Who would I choose to play Sinestro? Ha, well it's funny that you would ask such a thing! How about James Callis?!
