The Eclipse, award-winning Irish playwright Conor McPherson's recent ghost story, may have vanished into the ether that is the American film festival circuit since its American debut at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, but thankfully that doesn't mean it's been buried. Magnolia Pictures have just unveiled a new trailer for the alternately jarring and poignant romantic drama/horror film just in time to announce the film's March 26 release date.
The film follows one of the all time great That Guys Ciaran Hinds, a widow and failed writer that volunteers at a local Irish book festival that starts to see ghosts just as he begins a tentative romance with Iben Hjejle, a successful writer whose best-selling subject is ghosts and other paranormal phenomena.
The trailer's a bit of a mixed bag in terms of how accurately it represents the film's brooding atmosphere. On the one hand, the trailer makes it seem as if Hinds's rivalry with pompous author Aidan Quinn has something to do with his violent ghostly visitations (SPOILER Alert: it doesn't). On the other, there are thankfully no images of the ghosts anywhere in the trailer. McPherson's grizzly phantasms come and go in a flash but are pretty hard to forget once you've seen them. Considering how gory they look, there's no way you can throw them into a trailer and not take away most of their chilling appeal. Keep an eye out for The Eclipse as it was one of the best titles at Tribeca last year.
