While the headline for this story might suggest a vastly
more interesting scenario - one in which the iconic Predators hunt down,
laser-blast, and eviscerate every last filmgoer and critic at this year's SXSW festival - what we mean to say is something a bit different.
By now we all know that Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass will open the festival to much
R-rated, comic-book geekery and subsequent fanboy applause, and up until this
afternoon it didn't seem like much was set to match it. But the festival has
announced that Robert Rodriguez will be on-hand to screen a special "first
look" of the upcoming Predators,
followed by a brief Q&A. The screening will take place at the Alamo Ritz on
Friday, March 12th at 10:15PM.
No actual Predators will be on-hand.
Directed by Nimrod Antal, Predators is shaping up to be a legitimate and potentially effective sequel to the first film in the franchise. The offical press release describes as it as follows:
A bold new
chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under
Rodriguez's creative auspices at the filmmaker's Austin-based Troublemaker
Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce,
a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize
they've been brought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the exception
of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers - mercenaries,
Yakuza, convicts, death squad members - human "predators" that are
now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.
In addition to Adrien Brody, the film stars Topher Grace, Alice Braga, and
Laurence Fishburne. Co-starring are Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov
and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali.
Oh, yes. We gottchu, motherf*@ker!
