Looks like the team of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 may be doin' some treasure huntin' soon.
According to a recent report in the LA Times, Rich Ross, the latest studio Chairman at Walt Disney, is looking to scale back on production costs - leaving the latest installment of the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced Pirates franchise (aka On Stranger Tides) in shallower waters than previous adventures. Expensive set pieces, such as a scene in which the pirates were to encounter a carnival performing on a frozen River Thames and an elaborate carriage chase, have either been exercised or trimmed down to cut costs.
What does this mean for the final product?
Instead of the bloated second and third entries which relied heavily on epic CG battles, the fourth film could mimic the simplicity of Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl - which in my mind, could only be a good thing. The original Pirates is old fashioned, Spielberg level filmmaking; a back-to-the-basics action movie similar Raiders of the Lost Ark. I'd much prefer another Jack Sparrow foot chase through a Caribbean town than a 50-boat standoff in a deadly oceanic maelstrom.
What do you think? Is the budget cut taking Pirates in the right or wrong direction?
