Put on your thinking caps, gamers, because Paul Verhoeven
dropped something of a mind-bender to MTV this week. When talking to the site
about his upcoming projects, Veerhoven revealed that he'll be working in the
realm of video game adaptations, briefly explaining the project, but leaving
out one important aspect: the damn title...
"I am working on
a movie now that is... situated in 1914. Basically, Indiana Jones-ish you could
say, but also Hitchcockian," he explained in a recent interview with MTV's
Josh Horowitz. "We are scripting it. It's an idea that exists already...
from another medium, and so we are making it now into a film narrative."
Which medium, Josh asked. "A game, a video game...The writer of the video
game has asked me to keep [the identity of the game] secret until he has a
script."
While writer is apparently also helping to script the
big-screen version of the game - whatever the hell it is - Verhoeven isn't
providing any more specifics. That said, a Hitchcockian, Indiana Jones-style
adventure seems like a fairly specific narrative, but no recent titles are
springing immediately to mind. And considering that the gaming industry now
only makes titles that are set in WWII, present day Middle East, or a
war-torn future-planet, the possibilities can't be that numerous. Could it be Red Dead Redemption, perhaps? Maybe some aspect of Uncharted? Sadly, the dates or the suggested tone don't match up on either of those.
