James "Rhodey" Rhodes is the obvious choice.
The banter in Iron Man 2 makes it clear that "Iron Man doesn't have a sidekick" - that Rhodey, when suited up as War Machine, is more of an equal.
Furthermore, it is canonically accurate. When Tony Stark was too much of a drunk to fight evil, Rhodey suited up and saved the day.
Lastly, we've already seen Rhodey's ability to appear in disguise. I mean, come on, for a whole movie Terrance Howard contorted his body and face to look like the spitting image of Don Cheadle!
Natalie Rushman, or Natasha Romanoff (or, heck, Black Widow, even though those words are never spoken in Iron Man 2) is not a crazy choice to put on the Stark engineered Iron Man suit in The Avengers.
Her badassery is left in no doubt by the conclusion of Iron Man 2, and, as an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., she'll very much be aware of the Avengers' manoeuvers. (Indeed, the Marvel movies are setting up the Avengers as a full on S.H.I.E.L.D. as per Ulitamtes.)
Her inside knowledge of Stark Enterprises could also give her the leg up on mastering the Iron Man suit, and I'm sure Tony wouldn't mind giving her private lessons.
From a practical standpoint, Jon Favreau has said he loved working with Scarlett Johansson, and wants to see a new approach to female superheroes.
The downside to this, however, is Stark Enterprises has yet to come up with a suit that is form-fitting. If yo've got ScarJo in a movie, you want to, you know, see her.
