With the release of Wall
Street: Money Never Sleeps rapidly approaching, Oliver Stone is in search
of his next project. Surprisingly, it appears that it won't be a conspiracy
tale or political biopic - which, to Stone, are occasionally one and the same -
nor will it be some historical epic or insane piece of ultraviolence. No, it
looks like the director's next gig will be adapting the first in a long series
of 1960's pulp detective novels about a grizzled character called Travis McGee.
The Hollywood Reporter has Stone circling the project with
Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star in the title role. Says THR:
McGee is the shaggy
hero of 21 detective novels written by John D. MacDonald and could provide
fodder for another Fox franchise. The movie will be based on the first book in
the series, "The Deep Blue Good-by," published in 1964. The novel tracks the
Florida-based "salvage consultant" as he reluctantly leaves his houseboat to go
in search of a treasure hidden by a soldier after World War II.
With so many novels in the series, Fox would no doubt be
looking at this film as the first in a potential franchise. And given the
filmographies of both DiCaprio and Stone, so are we...
